First Steps Childcare has been a long-term asset of the Sanford Community Adult Education (SCAE) high school completion program. Originally a component of the Fresh Start literacy program, First Steps has grown and matured just as its clients have grown and matured! First Steps began at the adult education learning center in the basement of Marland Hall on the Nasson College campus, moved to Roosevelt School when adult education took over that building, moved to the basement of Lincoln School when adult education was relocated, and recently moved into its lovely, brand-new space at 14 King Street in Springvale.
First Steps provides very affordable day-time childcare services to students participating in SCAE’s high school completion and certificate programs, thus enabling those students to concentrate on their studies and be assured that their children are safe and sound. In addition to childcare, First Steps incorporates pre-school learning and kindergarten readiness for all its charges. Children aged six weeks and up are eligible to attend.
In September of 2008, First Steps Childcare was licensed by the State of Maine to provide services to the general public, thus opening up slots in our childcare/preschool program to children of SCAE graduates attending college, as well as to employees of Sanford Public Schools. It is anticipated that later afternoon and evening hours will be available soon.
