Yes! Absolutely! But we also offer Spanish, American Sign Language, Painting, Welding and more. Our access to talented local instructors gives us flexibility to adapt to current interests in our community. These classes support themselves, bring adults into the buildings supported by their taxes, provide personal enrichment, and engage citizens in their community. Since 80% of Sanford taxpayers do not have children in public schools, we are proud to offer a wide variety of affordable and appealing options to the lifelong learners in Sanford/Springvale!
We respond to needs and interests expressed by businesses, groups, and individuals in choosing courses. SCAE strives to offer classes which will expand learning AND create enough revenue to cover costs.
In our Academic program we select courses that enable students to fulfill their goals to acquire high school credentials, prepare for college, or enhance literacy skills for better employment opportunities. We meet with business partners to determine their current and anticipated employment needs so that we can identify appropriate courses. Federal guidelines about proper use of public facilities also influence course selection.
Register online: Enrichment (non-academic) courses are available for online registration on this secure website.
Register by mail: You may register by mail using the registration form inside the back cover of our printed brochure and you may pay by personal check, money order, or by providing your credit card info on the necessary registration form. Do not send cash through the mail.
Register by phone: If you register by phone, we can accept a credit card payment.
Register in person: If you register in person at our Springvale office, you may pay by personal check, credit card, money order, or cash.
If you search for courses online, you will know because the web page will say “Course full” and give you the option of subscribing to the waiting list. We strongly recommend adding your name to the waiting list as cancellations do happen. If we have sufficient interest, we will often schedule another session of the class!
If you are on a waiting list, you will be contacted if a space becomes available. All waiting lists are handled on a “first come – first serve” basis and each class is filled in the order people were placed on the waiting list.
There is no charge for the HiSET (high school equivalency diploma), but you must pass the HiSET test. Please see our Academic website
No! We serve people from all over the state of Maine; any adult is welcome to register for our courses.
We are always open to suggestions for new courses. If you would like to propose a new course and maybe even be an instructor for that course, contact our Enrichment Coordinator via email at AdultEd@Sanford.Org and ask about a Preliminary Plans Form.
SCAE is for any adult who needs essential skills or believes learning enriches life! Our students come from all over Maine, the U.S., and the world, and range in age from 18 to 80+. While some students focus on completion of a high school credential, the majority of students take classes for basic literacy and numeracy, college preparation, job and retraining skills, new capacity development, and enrichment.

SCAE provides classes to improve access to higher education, better jobs, and lifelong learning. Our program is divided into three different components: Academics, Job Skills, and Enrichment. Classes are offered primarily at the Anderson Learning Center weekdays from 8:30 AM to 9:00 PM.
As a program of Sanford Public Schools, we meet the high volume of demand and maximize use of public facilities by also holding classes in other city schools.
